IN THIS LESSON

We sing chant prayerfully with understanding.

The Alma Redemptoris Mater is sung from the first Sunday of Advent through the end of the Christmas Season on February 2nd. The text, credited to the eleventh-century monk Herimann the Lame, makes use of one of Mary’s most poetic titles: star of the sea.

Kind mother of the Redeemer, who remain the open gate of heaven and the star of the sea:

help your falling people who want to rise, you who bore your holy Parent, while nature marveled: a Virgin before and after, receiving that ‘Ave’ from Gabriel’s mouth, have mercy on [us] sinners.

Let us worship forever the most holy Sacrament.
